For the second time on Saturday, the Hoyas put up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Shirley again led off and was hit by a pitch. Collins lined a one-out double down the left field line to put runners on second and third and Carter grounded out softly to shortstop, allowing Shirley to cross the plate.
Stony Brook again responded quickly, scoring two runs, one earned, in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
The Hoyas fought back to tie the score in the fourth inning. Busch started the rally by working a one-out walk. Bialkowski then lined a single to center to score Busch and tie things up, 2-2.
Stony Brook regained its lead in the top of the fifth on a leadoff double, single and throwing error.
GU threatened in its final at bat. Hall lead off by getting hit on an 0-2 pitch and, with one out, stole second base and went to third on a balk. With two outs, Webber was hit by a pitch, putting the winning run on base. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, which did not get far enough away to allow Hall to score, and was replaced by a pinch-runner, Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). However, Collins grounded out to second to end the game.
The two teams will conclude their series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will get the start for the Hoyas.
