CINCINNATI - The Georgetown baseball team could not slow down the Xavier bats on Friday afternoon, falling, 17-4, in a BIG EAST Conference game.
Xavier came out swinging early, taking an 11-0 lead after three innings, including three home runs in the first two innings, off of Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca).
After the Musketeers added a run off of Vince Leoni (West Hill, Calif./Crespi Carmelite) in the fourth, the Hoyas got on the board in the top of the fifth. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) grounded a two-run single into right field, scoring Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School), who had reached on a fielder's choice, and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), who had walked.
Xavier came right back with four runs, on two more home runs, in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to extend its lead to 17-2.
Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) launched his second home run of the season in the eighth, well over the right field wall, for a two-run shot to bring the score to 17-4. The homer scored Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont), who had led off the inning with a sharp double off the right field wall.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start. Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) will get the start for Georgetown.
