Final Stats

WASHINGTON - The No. 6-seeded Georgetown men's tennis squad upset the No. 3 DePaul Blue Demons on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championships presented by New York Life. The teams played the match at the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind.

The match started in DePaul's favor as the Blue Demons took the doubles point. The duo of Tim Corwin and Alex Galoustian defeated Andrew Dottino (New York, N.Y./Pendleton) and Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton), 8-3, from the No. 3 spot.

The Hoyas had an answer at No. 2 doubles, however, as Jordan Portner (Ellicott, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) were victorious over Kyle Johnson and Sten Leusink, 8-5. Jan-Willem Feilzer and David Vieyra clinched the point for DePaul when they defeated Peter Beatty (Portland, Ore./Middlesex School) and John Brosens (Bedford, N.Y./Brunswick School), 8-7 (7-1).

Singles play began and it seemed as though DePaul would run away with it as it won the No. 1 and No. 3 matches to take the 3-0 lead, but the Hoyas would go on a run and win the remaining matches to seal the win at 4-3.

Dottino recorded the first Hoya point in singles when he took down Max Renke, 6-4, 6-3, from the No. 6 spot. At No. 4 singles, Beatty went back-and-forth with Kyle Johnson but ultimately prevailed in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (11-9).

Georgetown tied it at 3-3 when Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) defeated David Vieyra in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

GU clinched the victory as Mac Rechan (Clayton, Mo./Clayton) found himself in a see-saw matchup with Feilzer. After taking the first set, 6-4, Feilzer came back with a second set 4-6 win. Rechan came through and won the third set 6-4 for the Blue & Gray victory.

"The freshmen and our senior Andrew (Dottino) really stepped up for us today," said Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "We were down 3-0 and Andrew came out and he was ready to win. I have never been more proud of this team, they played with such strength and determination."

The Hoyas will face the No. 2-seeded Marquette Golden Eagles, who defeated No. 7 Creighton 4-2 on Friday morning, in the semifinal round with play slated to begin at 9 a.m.
