WASHINGTON - The Georgetown softball team split Saturday's doubleheader versus Providence dropping the first game, 7-3, before coming back and defeating the Friars 8-2 in the second game. With the split, the Hoyas improve to 14-29 overall and 4-11 in BIG EAST play.
Game 1: Providence 7, Georgetown 3
The Hoyas and Friars were even for the majority of the game until four runs over the last two innings resulted in the victory for Providence.
Both Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeak) and Avery Geehr (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) saw action in game one. Hyson took the loss after pitching six innings and giving up five runs off of five hits. Geehr pitched the final inning and gave up the final two runs off of three hits.
GU was on the board early as Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) doubled down the left field line and brought in Samantha Giovaniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park) for the 1-0 lead. Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) followed with a bunt that allowed Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida to cross home and increase the Hoya lead to 2-0.
After a quiet second and third inning, Providence scored two runs off of two hits in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 2-2. The Friars jumped ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth but Georgetown was quick to respond as Hyson brought in Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) to even it up at 3-3.
Providence jumped ahead in the top of the sixth following a two-run homerun and scored two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh by way of a single to seal the 7-3 victory.
Eight different Hoyas had hits in the loss, with Kane, Hyson and Appelbe having two-hit efforts, for a total of 11; it was the first time since March 17 in a game versus Princeton that GU had double digit hits.
Game two: Georgetown 8, Providence 2
Senior Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) pitched the complete game and picked up her third win of the season to move to 3-3 in the circle.
Like in the first game, Georgetown was quick to get on the board. Giovanniello was the first Hoya to cross home following a throwing error by the pitcher.
Appelbe singled to left field to bring in Hyson and a double up the middle by Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) scored Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida to make it 3-0 after one inning of play.
Providence got on the board in the top of the second inning to cut the GU lead at 3-1, but Georgetown increased its lead when Hyson singled up the middle and brought in two runs for a 5-1 cushion. Sophia Gargicevich-Almeida made it 6-1 as her single up the middle brought in Giovanniello.
The Friars were unable to answer Georgetown's offensive outburst and the Hoyas put the game out of reach as they added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. A single by Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) scored both Payton Lawton (Yorba Linda, Calif./Rosary) and Elvina for the 8-1 score.
The Friars added their final run of the game in the top of the sixth to make it 8-2 which would go on to be the final.
For the second-straight game, eight different Hoyas recorded a hit with Kane, Giovanniello, Elvina and Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) having two.
The Friars and Hoyas will play the rubber match tomorrow morning at Guy Mason Field, first pitch is slated for noon.
