April 26, 2015

Game One | Game Two

CINCINNATI - Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) combined to pitch 14.1 innings and strike out 18 batters, leading the Georgetown baseball team to a BIG EAST doubleheader sweep over Xavier. The Hoyas won by scores of 4-1 and 2-1, moving to 22-18 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

Game One: Georgetown 4, Xavier 1 (7 innings) ...
The Hoyas drew seven walks and used timely hitting to win, 4-1, in a seven-inning game to open the doubleheader.

Smith pitched six innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits while tying a season high with eight strikeouts. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) picked up his eighth save of the season with an inning of scoreless relief.

The Hoyas jumped on the board just three batters into the game. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) led off the game with a walk and advanced to second when Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) was awarded first base on catcher's interference. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) followed with a single to right field to drive in Busch, giving GU a 1-0 lead.

Georgetown extended the lead to 2-0 with a run in the top of the second inning without the benefit of a hit. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton, Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) and Webber all walked, to load the bases and, with two outs, Bialkowski scampered home on a wild pitch.

The lead doubled to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Webber walked and went to third when Collins doubled to right field. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) lined a first-pitch fastball into the left-center field gap to score both runners.

Xavier scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Musketeers loaded the bases with no outs, but Smith proceeded to strike out the next three batters. However, the third strike three got away from the catcher Webber, allowing a run to score.

Game Two: Georgetown 2, Xavier 1 ...
Superko pitched a career-high 8.1 innings while striking out 10, also a personal best, leading GU to a 2-1 victory, completing the sweep.

The 8.1 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts were both season highs for Georgetown pitchers. Superko faced the minimum number of batters, and had retired 24 batters in a row until a one-out single in the eighth. The only other batter to reach base was a leadoff single in the first inning, but the runner was caught stealing by Collins at catcher.

Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) pitched 0.2 innings of relief in the ninth, striking out the final batter of the game for his first save.

For the second time on Sunday, Georgetown scored within the first three batters of the game to grab a 1-0 lead. With one out, Webber hit a deep fly ball to left field that went off the fielder's glove for a two-base error. Collins followed, grounding one sharply off the first baseman for another two-base error, allowing Webber to score.

Busch added a solo home run, his fourth of the season, over the left field wall in the top of the fifth inning to extend GU's lead to 2-0.

Xavier scored its run in the ninth. After Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) made a diving catch for the first out, a pinch-hit single ended the streak of 24-consecutive batters retired by Superko. Mathews came in and allowed two singles to plate a run but, with the tying run on third, struck out the final batter.

GU will host Navy for a midweek game on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. St. John's will visit Shirley Povich Field next weekend for a three-game, BIG EAST series.
