Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team could not overcome an early deficit, falling to the Naval Academy, 8-5, on Wednesday night in a midweek, non-conference game at Shirley Povich Field.
AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) led the offense with two hits and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) had a three-run home run. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) was on base three time with three walks.
Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) and Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) each struck out the sides in scoreless innings of relief. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) also had a scoreless frame, striking out two.
Navy (33-17) got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas (22-19) came back with four runs in the bottom of the second to jump ahead. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) led off with a double down the left field line, advancing to the third when the left fielder misplayed the ball in the corner. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School) drove him in immediately with a double of his own, also down the left field line. After Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) drew a one-out walk, Hall drove his second home run of the year over the left field wall to give GU a 4-1 lead.
The Midshipmen answered right back with six runs in the top of the third inning off of Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) and Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS). A single run in the top of the fourth, off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans School) extended their lead to 8-4.
Georgetown scored an unearned run in the eighth to complete the scoring. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) and Carter hit consecutive one-out singles and both moved into scoring position on a ground out by Kuzbel. Dillon hit a high chopper that the shortstop bobbled for an error, allowing Collins to score.
The Hoyas will continue their homestand this weekend with a three-game series against BIG EAST rival St. John's at Shirley Povich Field. Both Friday's and Saturday's games will begin at 7 p.m. while first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
