April 3, 2015 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-8, 1-0 BIG EAST) will continue BIG EAST Conference play this weekend with a matchup against the No. 8/9 University of Florida Gators (8-4, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
On Wednesday, the Hoyas finished off its non-conference schedule with a 12-3 loss to No. 1/1 Maryland. Three different Hoyas scored and one tallied an assist on the offensive end of the field. The Hoyas were outshot by the Terps, 29-19, and fell short on the draw with four to Maryland's 13. UMD held the 24-10 advantage on ground balls and GU forced 13 Terp turnovers while committing 16.
Earlier in the week, freshman midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) was the named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.
Seibel turned in a pair of impressive performances in a 1-1 week for the Hoyas. In a narrow setback at nationally-ranked Loyola, the rookie totaled two goals on three shots along with a caused turnover and a ground ball. In Georgetown's BIG EAST-opening win over Vanderbilt, Seibel came off the bench to score a goal and add two ground balls and a caused turnover, halting the Hoyas' losing skid with the 10-6 victory over the conference newcomer.
Senior attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) leads the Hoyas in scoring with 18 points on 13 goals and a squad-high five assists. Sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) has 12 goals and a squad-best five assists for 17 points, while junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) has scored 14 points on 13 goals and one assist to round out the top three.
Junior midfielder Kelsey Perselay (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) leads the squad with 15 draw controls, while senior defender Casey McGowan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) has picked up a team-best 20 ground balls. Senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) has also posted 16 caused turnovers on the defensive end of the field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has seen a majority of the minutes in the cage with 54 saves to her credit.
Florida senior Shannon Gilroy was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for a second-consecutive week and junior Carly Ross was named to the conference's Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Gilroy led the Gators to a 17-3 victory over Temple on Saturday and tallied a game-high five points on four goals and one assist. The senior added three draw controls and helped UF snap Temple's five-game winning streak.
The All-American midfielder currently ranks second nationally in points (57) and goals (43). She needs just two more goals to move into the top-25 of the all-time goal scorers in NCAA Division I history list.
The Hoyas are 1-2 all-time against the Gators with a mark of 1-1 on the road. In the last meeting in 2012, the Hoyas fell 12-9 at Multi-Sport Field. The last time the Blue & Gray played in Florida, GU lost 17-10. The lone victory was a 13-11 win in Gainesville during the 2010 season.
The opening draw is scheduled for noon. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
