STORRS, Conn. - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (7-10) tried to mount a comeback but could not find one late, falling to the University of Connecticut Huskies (11-6), 11-10, in the BIG EAST Championship semifinal on Thursday evening at the Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, Conn. It was Georgetown's fourth-consecutive one-goal game and snapped a five-game win streak for the Blue & Gray.

"We had opportunities, but we just dug ourselves into a hole and UConn played very well," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "The thing I'm most proud of, is that throughout the season we became a team. Putting on a jersey doesn't make you a team, it's how you deal with each other and work with each other. I'm really proud of the seniors for helping that to happen."

Sophomore attacker Colleen Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) led the way with four goals and three assists for seven points, while junior midfielder Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) and freshman midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) both managed two goals. Six different Hoyas scored a point in the contest.

The Hoyas outshot the Huskies, 30-21, but had a slight disadvantage on the draw with 11 to UConn's 12. Connecticut held the 9-8 advantage on ground balls and GU forced 10 Husky turnovers while committing eight.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the loss in the cage with six saves in the contest.

Bandos scored off of opening draw, but UConn pulled in the next one and tied it up to make it 1-1 just 46 seconds into the game. Georgetown's scoring short lived, however, as the Huskies put together a 3-0 run to take the 4-1 lead.

Georgetown answered with a 4-0 run of its own. Seibel ended the scoring drought as a flip play brought her around the right side and she buried it to make it 4-2 at 19:48. Off of the ensuing draw control, Lovett bounced it between the legs of UConn keeper Shannon Nee to cut the deficit to one. She tied it up minutes later on the free position shot to make it four all and force a Husky timeout.

At 12:46, junior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) added her first of the contest, hitting a free position goal, but the Huskies ended the run on a goal at 11:55 to even the score at five. That UConn goal sparked a 3-0 run as the Blue & Gray struggled to possess.

Lovett stopped the momentum on a goal from the right side as she tallied the hat trick. She then added one more as senior attacker Sammy Giordano (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) managed the assist to once again tie the score at the seven.

With 1:31 remaining in the first, UConn scored one more to take the lead, 8-7. Despite a late push, GU couldn't find the back of the cage to make it a one-goal game at the break.

Connecticut opened the scoring in the second half on a free position goal and added one more to make it 10-7 five minutes in.

After 10 scoreless minutes, the Huskies took a four-goal lead, forcing the Blue & Gray to call timeout.

The timeout worked, as Seibel spun and scored to make it 11-8 with 13:27 left in the game. UConn gained possession and attempted to hold it, but the defense forced a turnover and senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) hit it on a give-and-go to cut it to two. Lovett continued to be active, assisting on both of the goals.

With just over two minutes to play, Bandos came up with a big goal once again from Lovett to make it 11-10. However, the Huskies pulled in the next draw and looked to hold it.

A yellow card in the final minute put the Hoyas down a player, and GU pulled the goalie trying to force and turnover. Despite the effort, the defense couldn't regain possession and eventually fell, 11-10.

Lovett and Devine were both named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team for their efforts.

The Hoyas finish the season with a mark of 7-10 overall. The squad will graduate nine seniors, but returns four of its top five scorers next year.
