Bethesda, Md. - The Georgetown baseball team gave up three unearned runs during a 6-3 loss to Butler on Friday night in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field.
Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started on the mound and went 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, just one earned, with four strikeouts. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) relieved a pitched 4.2 innings, striking out five while giving up two runs.
Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) each had two hits to lead Georgetown's offense.
Butler (20-27, 6-7 BIG EAST) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when a pair of unearned runs scored on a two-out error.
The Hoyas (22-23, 5-8 BIG EAST) answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Busch led off with a walk and stole second base. He advanced to third on a ground out by Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) and scored when Collins lined a single into right field, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
GU tied the score in the second with three-consecutive two-out singles. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) started the rally with a sharp single into left field. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) followed with a single between the third baseman and the shortstop, pushing Hall up to second. Busch followed with a single to the same spot, scoring Hall to knot the score, 2-2.
The Bulldogs took the lead back in the fourth with a single run before extending their lead to 4-2 with another unearned run in the fifth.
An insurance run in the seventh put the Hoyas in a 5-2 hole before they got a run back in the eighth. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) hit a one-out double to left field for Georgetown's first hit since the third inning. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored easily when Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) reached on an infield single, cutting Butler's lead to 5-3.
The visitors added another insurance run in the ninth to provide the final margin, 6-3.
The Hoyas and Bulldogs will resume their three-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening. Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) will take the hill for GU. Prior to the game, Georgetown will celebrate the four members of the senior class with a special Senior Day ceremony. Pitchers Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) and Hollenbeck as well as Busch and first baseman AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) will all be playing their final home games this weekend.
