Georgetown Baseball Summer Update: Adleman Thriving in Double-A

WASHINGTON - Summer leagues are a large part of the collegiate baseball experience as student-athletes from around the country continue to hone their skills. Several members of the Georgetown baseball team, as well as two alums, are enjoying success this summer playing for various teams around the country.

2010 Georgetown alum, Tim Adleman, is in his second season in the Cincinnati Reds organization, pitching for their Double-A affiliate, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Adleman was recently selected to represent the South Division in the Southern League All-Star Game and pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout on June 23. Adleman, who is third in the entire Southern League with a 2.05 ERA, was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week on June 29. He leads the Pensacola pitching staff with 87.2 innings pitched is tied for the team lead with four wins and is third with 66 strikeouts.

Nick Collins, who was drafted in the eighth round, 248th overall, by the Oakland Athletics in last month's Major League Baseball Draft, has begun his professional career. Collins, the 2015 BIG EAST Player of the Year and third-highest draft pick in Georgetown's history, started out with the A's Arizona League rookie team but, after just four games, was promoted to the Vermont Lake Monsters in the New York-Penn League. In four games with the Lake Monsters, Collins is batting .357 (5-for-14) with a double, an RBI and four runs scored.

Rising junior David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) got off to a slow start for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the prestigious Cape Cod League, but has pitched three-consecutive scoreless outings, covering seven innings. In all, Ellingson, who was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team this season, has made seven appearances for the Red Sox, going 0-1 with a 2.61 ERA and five strikeouts in 10.1 innings.

Rising senior Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's HS/Phillips Andover), who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 28th round, 840th overall, is pitching for the Plymouth Pilgrims in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). Pomeroy, who converted to a pitcher during the 2015 season, has made six appearances for the Pilgrims, covering five innings. He has struggled, giving up nine earned runs while striking out six, but pitched a scoreless inning in his last appearance with two strikeouts.

In the Northwoods League, rising senior Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) was pitching for the Wisconsin Woodchucks before being shut down for the summer after reaching an innings limit. In six starts covering 30.2 innings, Smith, a 2015 All-BIG EAST First Team selection, finished 2-1 with a 2.34 ERA and a team-leading 29 strikeouts. Rising junior Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School) is also pitching for the Woodchucks and has pitched 34 innings in seven appearances, including six starts, and has registered a 2-2 record with a 3.44 ERA and 20 strikeouts.

Several Hoyas are playing in the local Cal Ripken League, featuring teams in Virginia and Maryland. Rising junior Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge), in his second season in the Ripken League, is suiting up this summer for the Herndon Braves. In 18 games so far, Kuzbel is batting .267 (16-for-60) with three doubles, eight walks, and four RBI.

Rising sophomore Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) is also in the Ripken League, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 18 games, Bernstein is batting .203 (13-for-64) with a double, eight walks, two RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored.

Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret), a rising junior for the Hoyas, is pitching for the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbirds. In four games, including two starts, Leonard has thrown eight innings, registering a 1-1 record with six strikeouts.

Rising sophomores Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Sante Fe Christian) and Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) as well as rising junior Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) are all playing for the Alexandria Aces. Bushor has played just eight games and has two hits and driven in a run while Hall has just one hit and one RBI in seven games Superko has made four starts on the mound, covering 22.2 innings. He has allowed just six runs for a 2.38 ERA while striking out 12.

Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton), a rising junior, is playing for the Wilmington Sharks in the Coastal Plains League. Bialkowski, who also played in the Coastal Plains League last season for Florence, is batting .246 (17-for-69) with a double, a triple and eight RBI in 21 games.

Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville), who made two appearances in 2015 after coming back from Tommy John surgery, recently joined the Addison Braves in the Chicago Suburban League. In two starts, Chudacoff is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA and four strikeouts in 8.2 innings.

Rising sophomore Austin Shirley (Stafford, Pa./Conestoga) is playing for the Dodge City A's in the Jayhawk League. In 24 games, he is sixth on the team with a .257 (19-for-83) batting average. He has hit a double, two home runs and 12 RBI.
