WASHINGTON - Georgetown field hockey senior Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) scored with just over 17 minutes remaining to pull the Hoyas within one, but a penalty stroke goal by Casey Umstead with less than five minutes left enabled No. 1 Connecticut to escape with a 5-3 BIG EAST victory Friday at Cooper Field.
Georgetown (4-11, 0-6 BIG EAST) limited the Huskies to 21 shots, their lowest total in the last five games. The Hoyas also held the nation's top-ranked scoring offense to five goals or less for the eighth time in 16 games this season.
Georgetown is also the first team to score three goals against UConn this season.
The Huskies took a 2-0 lead 5:09 into the game before freshman Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season just 1:13 later when she redirected a pass from Graves-Brown into the left corner. The assist was the 11th of Graves-Brown's career, moving her into 13th place on the school's all-time list.
Georgetown preserved the one-goal margin until Amanda Collins scored with only 2:07 left in the first half to give the Huskies a 3-1 halftime advantage.
Anna Middendorf scored in the first 10 minutes of the second to push the UConn lead to 4-1, but the Hoyas scored the game's next two tallies just 2:29 apart to cut the visitor's lead to one, 4-3. Senior Maria McDonald (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Graves-Brown each picked up their third goals of the season.
Fighting to tie the game amidst a pouring rain, Georgetown managed to keep the Huskies at bay until it was whistled for illegal touching inside the circle, leading to Umstead's penalty stroke with 4:39 to play.
Senior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) finished with nine saves, including six in the second half. She now has 410 for her career, 11 shy of Briana Pereira for fourth place in school history.
Meanwhile, the Hoyas forced Nina Klein to make six saves, one shy of her season high.
With one goal and one assist, Graves-Brown totaled a season-high three points and now has 39 for her career, moving her into 23rd place on the school's all-time list with 14 goals and 11 assists.
The Hoyas conclude their 2016 home schedule on Sunday when they welcome Towson to Cooper Field for a nonconference contest beginning at 1 p.m., on senior day. Prior to the game, the team will honor its six seniors: Graves-Brown, McDonald, Skonecki, Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and Hailey Vann (Yorktown, Va./Tabb).
