Oct. 23, 2016 Final Stats
WASHINGTON - Georgetown field hockey senior
Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) picked up her 19th career win and ninth career shutout while senior
Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) had a goal and an assist as the Hoyas defeated Towson Sunday at Cooper Field in the final home game of the 2016 season, 4-0.
Georgetown (5-11) totaled 25 shots and a season-high 19 penalty corners which were one shy of the school record set against Davis & Elkins in 1997.
For Skonecki, she moved into third place in school history with her 19th career victory. She is also ranked fifth in saves (411), fifth in save percentage (.721) and second in shutouts (9) while totaling over 3,700 minutes played.
Freshman Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill./Loyola Academy) scored twice on Sunday, raising her team-high goal and point totals to seven and 14, respectively. She scored the game-winning goal just over 17 minutes into the game off an assist from freshman Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
With two games remaining, Getz could become the first freshman to lead the team in goals and points in the same season since 2002 when Jessica Quinn had 11 goals and 23 points.
Thompson then scored her second goal of the season and third of her career off a deflection in front on a penalty corner to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead at the half.
Georgetown held its opponent scoreless in the opening half for the second time this season while improving its record to 5-2 when scoring the game's first goal.
Thompson then picked up her team-leading fifth assist of the season just over five minutes into the second half when she and senior Maria McDonald (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) connected with sophomore Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) who scored her second goal of the season on a blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner.
All four of Georgetown's goals were set up by the penalty corner as Getz added her second of the game three minutes later when she redirected a shot by junior Megan Parsons (Chester Springs, Pa./Villa Maria) off a corner.
In a surprisingly physical contest, the two teams combined for five green cards and four yellow.
Megan Boyle got the start in goal for the Tigers (2-15), making nine saves in 57 minutes, before giving way to Katie Schmidt who had two saves over the final 13. Katie McNeel was also credited with a defensive save.
Prior to the game, the team honored its six seniors, Skonecki, Thompson, McDonald, Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy), Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and Hailey Vann (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) who were playing in the final home game of their careers. During their four seasons, the 2016 seniors have won 21 games, the most since 2005.
The Hoyas wrap-up their 2016 season with two road games next weekend, beginning with a BIG EAST battle at Villanova on Saturday at noon before finishing with a nonconference contest at La Salle on Sunday.
