Georgetown 1, DePaul 1
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team will be seeking its first BIG EAST Championship on Sunday, advancing to the title game after edging DePaul, 5-4, in penalty kicks in one of two semifinal games at Shaw Field on Friday afternoon. The Hoyas and the Blue Demons played to a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods.
The Hoyas, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, will play No. 1 seed Marquette on Sunday, Nov. 6. Kickoff at Shaw Field is slated for 1 p.m. and the game will be shown live on FOX Sports 1. Georgetown, ranked No. 7 in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 5 in the Soccer America poll, is now 15-2-3 overall.
"It was a tough game," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "It was a tough game against a very good team. That's an NCAA-caliber team. They're front four is as dangerous and dynamic as any in the country and we've faced the best in the country. We were disappointed with the goal we gave up. It was going to take a strong effort. Tactics and all of that went out of the window and it was just going to come down to gut check time and if we could find a way to get back in the game.
"We finished the strongest and I think we had, besides the goal, the two best chances. I say it a lot, but if it were a boxing match, we'd have won on points. It's a cruddy way to lose a game and we lost two of them last year so we know what they're (DePaul) feeling. Someone has to win and someone has to lose and today was our time."
In the penalty kick phase, the Hoyas converted all five of their shots, with junior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry), junior midfielder Taylor Pak (Wellington, Fla./American Heritage), sophomore Meghan Shaver (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills), freshman Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) and graduate student Crystal Thomas (Elgin, Ill./Wheaton Academy/Notre Dame) all scoring.
DePaul, meanwhile, converted each of its first four kicks, but the fifth kick, from Elizabeth Endy, hit the crossbar and sent Georgetown to the BIG EAST title game.
The Blue Demons, who beat Georgetown, 4-1 on Oct. 23, ending the team's 14-game unbeaten streak, jumped on top in the 18th minute, with Franny Cerny taking a feed from midfield and flicking the ball over sophomore goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) at 17:25.
The Hoyas came out in the second half and aggressively looked for the equalizer. It came in the 66th minute when a corner kick from Corboz dropped into the box and graduate student Marina Paul (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Laguna Beach) tapped it past DePaul goalkeeper Lauren Frasca.
Georgetown had two more chances late in the game, but a shot from senior forward Grace Damaska (Milton, Ga./Blessed Trinity) went wide in the 80th minute and one from Thomas in the 86th minute was off the mark.
Both teams had nine shots and the Hoyas held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Georgetown will play in its third BIG EAST Championship game on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Marquette in 2012 and 2-0 to DePaul in the 2014 title game.
