Feb. 25, 2016 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team (1-2) returns to the state of North Carolina for the second-consecutive weekend when it travels for a three-game series at Davidson College (2-2). The two teams will open the series on Friday with a 6 p.m. start. The Hoyas opened the 2016 season last weekend with a 1-2 showing at the Wake Forest Invitational. GU fell to Wake Forest (3-1) and Virginia Military Institute (4-0) before overcoming a 5-0 deficit to defeat the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), 6-5, in 10 innings on Sunday. Georgetown was down to its final strike twice before tying the game in the ninth inning and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) had the game-winning single in the 10th on a 2-out, full count pitch in his first career at-bat, driving in Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton), who had tripled earlier in the inning.
The GU bullpen was the highlight of the weekend, allowing just one run and five hits in 11 innings of work over the first three games. Six relievers had scoreless appearances of at least one inning, while Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) made two appearances, giving up just one wind-aided home run in 3.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts.
On Monday, sophomore outfielder Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and junior closer David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) were both named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. DeRenzi batted .400 and was on base seven times while Ellingson picked up the win on Sunday with two perfect innings of relief, with two strikeouts. It was the first career honor roll selection for both players.
Davidson enters the weekend at 2-2 after wins over Marist (4-3) and Buffalo (5-0) and losses to Air Force (9-4) and Wake Forest (7-4). The Wildcats are coming off an impressive 2015 season, finishing with the second-most wins in program history with an overall record of 28-22. They return five starters from last year's squad, including Atlantic 10 All-Conference performers Lee Miller (First Team), Sam Foy (Second Team) and Alec Acosta (All-Rookie), while adding 14 newcomers to the team. Jake leads Davidson through the first week with a .455 (5-for-11) batting average while Will Robertson has two home runs through his first four games. The pitching staff as a 4.37 ERA and are led by its top two starting pitchers, Clark Beeker (3.00 ERA, 6 IP) and Durin O'Linger (0.00 ERA, 6 IP).
Last season, the Wildcats swept Georgetown in a doubleheader, 6-2 and 12-11, in Davidson. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) went 4-for-8 and was on base seven times in the two games. In game two, the Hoyas scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to take an 11-9 lead, but Davidson scored three times in the bottom of the ninth for the walkoff win to complete the sweep.
Following this weekend's series, Georgetown will play its home-opener on Wednesday, March 2 when it hosts UMBC at 2 :30 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas will then depart for its spring break trip to Florida, playing eight games in 10 days.
