DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson College scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away and defeat the Georgetown University baseball team, 9-3, on Friday evening at Wilson Field. GU fell to 1-3 on the season, while the Wildcats improved to 3-2.
Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) had three hits to lead the Georgetown offense. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) was on base twice, with a double, and scored two runs. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) had a pair of RBI singles.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) started for the Blue & Gray and went 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) gave up a run in 0.2 innings pitched and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) threw 1.2 innings, giving up one run with one strikeout. Anthony Morabito (Lansdale, Pa./La Salle College HS) made his collegiate debut and went 0.1 innings with his first career strikeout. Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville) made his first appearances of the season and retired both batters he faced.
The Hoyas got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Kuzbel led things off and reached on an error when the centerfielder dropped a fly ball. Bialkowski followed with a single to put two runners on and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) sent Kuzbel to third with a fly out to right field. Dillon grounded a single through the hole between first and second to score Kuzbel.
Davidson answered right back with a pair of unearned runs, on two GU errors, in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith got a strikeout, but the next batter reached on a fielder's choice, scoring a run. Three-consecutive two-out singles scored four more runs as Davidson extended its lead to 7-1.
Georgetown got a couple of runs back in the top of the sixth. Kuzbel lined a one-out double down the right field line and went to third on Bialkowski's third single of the game. Garza grounded out, scoring Kuzbel and sending Bialkowski to second. Dillon grounded an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Davidson tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
