Baseball Defeats Davidson behind Mathews' Six Shutout Innings

Feb. 27, 2016

Final Stats

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) fired six shutout innings and the Georgetown University baseball team built up a 5-0 lead and held off a late rally to defeat Davidson College, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. GU improved to 2-3 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 3-3.

Mathews picked up his first win of the season, striking out five while allowing just five hits. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's/Phillips Andover) and Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) combined for a scoreless inning and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) fired a perfect 1.1 innings with a strikeout for his first save of the season.

Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire School/Catholic) had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense. Five different Hoyas had an RBI and five different players scored a run.

GU got on the board quickly in the first inning as the first four batters reached base. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). A walk to Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge ) loaded the bases before a walk to Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) scored Hall from third. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) pushed DeRenzi across the plate with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Georgetown an early 2-0 lead.

The Hoyas only managed one other hit until the eighth inning, but Mathews was dealing on the mound. The junior struck out five batters over the first three innings, including striking out the side in the bottom of the third.

Bialkowski and Bushor led off the top of the eighth with back-to-back singles. Dillon followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Bialkowski. Dante Ricciardi (West Boylston, Mass./Worcester Academy) drove in Bushor with a bloop single to right field, putting runners on the corners. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) then laid down a safety squeeze, scoring Dillon from third to give the Blue & Gray a 5-0 lead.

Davidson scored three two-out runs, just one of them earned, off of Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) in the bottom of the eighth.

Ellingson entered with two outs and a runner on second and induced a fly ball to left. He then retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game with a strikeout.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. The rubber match will start at 1 p.m. with Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) starting on the mound for the Hoyas. A web stream, with a fee, and live stats for the game can be found at guhoyas.com.
