PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the University of Pennsylvania, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at the spring training home of the New York Mets, Tradition Field. With the win, GU improved to 6-7 on the season, while Penn fell to 2-4.
Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) picked up the win, improving to 2-2 on the season. He went six innings and gave up just two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out four. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) fired two scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) pitched a scoreless ninth, with one strikeout, for his fourth save of the season.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) each led the offense with two hits apiece.
The Hoyas put the leadoff man on in each of the first two innings, but could not take advantage. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) changed that in the top of the third, leading off with a solo shot over the left field fence for his second home run of the season. One out later, DeRenzi tripled into the left-center gap and came around to score on a ground out by Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge).
Penn got two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the score, 2-2. An error, double and two infield singles accounted for the runs.
GU regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Kuzbel led off with a single, advanced to second on a balk and went to third on a wild pitch. He scored when Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) hit an RBI grounder to second that was booted for an error.
The Hoyas tacked on a run in the top of the seventh. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He was still there with two outs when DeRenzi lined a double into right field for an RBI to extend GU's lead to 4-2.
The two teams will continue their series on Saturday at 3 p.m. at a side field of the Mets' spring training facility. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.guhoyas.com.
