Final Stats

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored seven runs over the final three innings, overcoming a one-run deficit for an 11-6 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at the spring training home of the New York Mets, Tradition Field. With the win, the Hoyas completed the three-game sweep of Penn and extended their winning streak to four games, improving to 8-7 on the season while Penn fell to 2-6. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led the offense with three hits while Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) had two hits, including the go-ahead home run, and finished with three RBI. Charlie Dillon (Chicago, Ill./Berkshire/Catholic) and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) both had two hits as well. All nine members of the starting lineup had at least one hit while eight scored at least one run and six had at least one RBI.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went five innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on five hits and two walks. He finished with four strikeouts. Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief, giving up just one run. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) recorded his fifth save of the season with a five-out effort, striking out three.

Penn took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an unearned run on three GU errors.

The Hoyas did not get their first baserunner until the top of the fourth when Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led off with a double over the right fielder's head. He moved to third on a single from Bushor and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge).

GU took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three times. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) started things off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS). An Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) single put runners on the corners and Webber promptly stole second to put two in scoring position. Hall singled to center to score Weisenberg and push Webber to third before the Hoyas executed a perfect double steal, allowing Webber to score and Hall to take second. One out later, Bushor doubled to right-center to score Hall, giving Georgetown a 4-1 lead.

The Quakers got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but Superko stranded the tying run at third.

Penn retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth, 5-4, on a two-out single and home run off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans).

In the top seventh, Hall lined a one-out single into left that the Penn left fielder misplayed, allowing Hall to get all the way to third base. He crossed the plate two pitches later on a wild pitch to tie the score, 5-5.

Penn again went back in the lead with a solo home run off of Davis in the bottom seventh, but GU struck for three in the top of the eighth. Kuzbel reached on an error to lead off the frame before Bialkowski launched his second home run of the season well over the right field fence to put Georgetown on top, 7-6. Dillon restarted the rally with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Bernstein roped a single into center to score Dillon and put the Hoyas up by two, 8-6.

Ellingson came on in relief of Davis in the bottom of the eighth with one out and the tying run at the plate. He quickly struck out both batters he faced to get out of the inning preserve the lead.

Georgetown tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth as the first five batters reached base safely. Shirley led off with a walk and moved up to second on a single by Bushor. Kuzbel lofted a ground-rule double deep down the right field line to score Shirley before Bialkowski just missed his second home run in as many innings, doubling off the right field wall to score Bushor from third. Dillon singled through a drawn-in infield to push Kuzbel across the plate and give GU an 11-6 lead.

The Hoyas will return to the Hilltop and play five home games this week at Shirley Povich Field. The Blue & Gray will first host Yale University on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.guhoyas.com.

Notes
Georgetown's series sweep of Penn was the first three-game sweep of an opponent since the Hoyas took all three games from Hartford, Feb. 21-22, 2014.
