After an hour rain delay, the Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-5) rallied to defeat George Mason (2-2), 15-12, on Wednesday evening at George Mason Stadium. The victory is Georgetown's 13th consecutive win over the Patriots.
Senior attacker Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) and freshman attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) both led the Hoyas with four goals apiece, Gebhardt also managed two assists. Kelsey Perselay (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added two goals while seniors Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame of Namur) and Natalie Miller (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), graduate student Morgan Rubin (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and freshmen Francesca Whitehurst (altimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) each tallied a goal.
The Blue & Gray outshot the Patriots, 24-21 and clinched 17 draw controls to George Mason's 11. GMU held a slight advantage in ground balls, 15-13, but the Hoyas took earned free-position shots to the Patriots' three.
Senior goalkeeper Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took the win in the cage with two saves in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) played for 30 minutes and posted four saves.
The teams exchanged goal-for-goal in the first half. Rubin started the scoring at 29:22 on an unassisted shot and just two minutes later Etchison tallied her first of the contest.
George Mason answered with three goals of its own, to take the lead with 19:38 left on the clock.
Bandos fought back with a free-position goal two minutes later, but two more GMU goals would keep the Patriots ahead at 5-3.
Capitalizing on a George Mason foul, Etchison registered her third goal of the game at 11:40, but a Georgetown foul allowed the Patriots to secure their sixth goal just a minute later.
The teams went back-and-forth for the next four minutes as they combined for four turnovers. Gebhardt would finally push past the Patriot defense at 6:23 finding the back of the cage off a free-position, cutting George Mason's advantage to 7-6 heading into the half.
Not wasting anytime, Georgetown evened the scored just 15 seconds into the second half as Gebhardt caged a free position goal. However, the Patriots regained the lead off its second free-position shot of the game.
Despite chasing the lead, the Hoyas didn't back down as a goal from Etchison ignited a 7-0 Georgetown run spanning thirteen minutes.
George Mason stopped the run scoring back-to-back goals at 12:46 and 9:3, respectively. Not letting up GU came right back less than 20 seconds later, extending Georgetown's lead to 14-9.
The Patriots attempted to rally back into the lead with three more goals, but the Hoya defense proved too much for GMU. The Blue & Gray closed out the game with a goal from Miller at 1:36 for a 15-12 Georgetown victory.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad hosts the No. 19 John Hopkins Blue Jays. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field. Live stats and a webcast will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
