March 23, 2016 WASHINGTON -
Despite recording 10 hits to George Mason's nine, the Georgetown University softball team (5-19) fell to the Patriots, 6-2, in seven innings to conclude non-conference play on Wednesday evening. Third baseman Taylor Henry (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) sparked the Hoya offense, going 2-fo-3 and driving in two RBI in the loss.
George Mason got on the board first as Liz Seymour blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first. Georgetown answered in the top of second with doubles from Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) and Henry to cut the Patriots' lead to one.
GMU seemingly broke the game open in the bottom of the second, rallying with two outs. Julia Czarnecki found home on a poor GU toss while Seymour came around to score on an error. Hayley Hinton later drove in two more GMU runs with a double.
The Hoyas answered in the top of the fourth inning with a double from senior Grace Appelbe (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep). With two outs Henry reached on a GMU error, giving Appelbe just enough time to run home from second.
Georgetown hammered out five more hits in the remaining three innings, but it would not be enough to rally a comeback as the game ended in a Patriot victory, 6-2.
The Blue & Gray will return to the field in its first BIG EAST series of the season against St. John's on Friday, March 25.
