BETHESDA, Md. - Behind five hitless innings from its bullpen, the Georgetown University baseball team defeated crosstown rival George Washington University, 2-1, Wednesday night in a nonconference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, GU won its third-consecutive game and improved to 18-20 on the season while GW's five-game winning streak was snapped and the Colonials fell to 17-22 overall.
Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started on the mound and went four solid innings, giving up just one run while scattering seven hits and two walks. He struck out one. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one walk while striking out two. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus), Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) all fired perfect innings.
Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) had two hits to lead the offense while Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) had a hit and two RBI.
GW got on the board first in the top of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Four singles produced a run, but further damage was prevented when Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) threw out a runner at the plate.
The Hoyas came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to provide the final offense of the game. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led off with an infield single and went to third on a double to the wall in left-center by Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont). Bernstein followed with a single up the middle to score both runners and give GU the 2-1 lead.
Georgetown's defense was strong from the beginning of the game. Along with Hall's play in the second inning, Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) threw out a potential base stealer to end the top of the first. The combination of Bushor and Bernstein turned a nifty double-play to end the third inning and Bushor ran down a fly ball in shallow left field to strand the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Hoyas had their chances to break the game open, stranding the bases loaded three times. With two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh, Bernauer was robbed of an extra-base hit on a diving catch by the right fielder in the right-center gap.
Georgetown will travel to Indianapolis on Thursday for a three-game, BIG EAST series against Butler University. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Saturday's contest is set for 1 p.m. and Sunday's series finale will be at noon.
