BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit, dropping its regular season finale, 10-5, to Villanova University on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the loss, GU fell to 25-29 on the season and 8-10 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova improved to 20-29 overall and 5-10 in conference action.
Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) led GU's 10-hit attack, finishing 3-for-4, a home run short of the cycle, with an RBI and three runs scored. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had two hits and three RBI while Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) also had two hits.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) threw two perfect innings out of the bullpen.
The Hoyas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with three two-out singles. Kuzbel and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) started the rally with singles to the opposite field before Bernauer singled up the middle to score Kuzbel and give GU a 1-0 lead.
Villanova answered in the top of the second, scoring six runs, all with two outs, on seven hits to take a 6-1 lead.
Georgetown began chipping away, pushing three runs across in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 6-4. DeRenzi started the rally with a one-out bunt single. He went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Kuzbel tripled to deep right field. After a walk to Bialkowski, Bernauer delivered his second RBI single to score Kuzbel. A double from Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) plated Bialkowski to pull the Hoyas within two.
The Wildcats again had an answer, however, scoring three times off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) in the top of the fourth to regain their five-run lead, 9-4.
Kuzbel led off the bottom of the fifth with a double into the left-center gap. He moved to third on a ground out by Bialkowski and scored when Bernauer grounded to the shortstop, bring GU within four, 9-5.
An unearned run in the top of the sixth put Villanova back on top by five, 10-5.
The Hoyas had chances in the late innings, loading the bases with two outs in the sixth and putting the first two runners on base in the eighth. Both times however, they were not able to push a run across.
Georgetown has a bye for the final weekend of BIG EAST play. The Blue & Gray will wait and see if they qualify for the BIG EAST Championships, presented by Jeep, which will be held May 26-29 at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. The Hoyas need Butler to beat Seton Hall twice when the two teams meet in Indianapolis.
