June 11, 2016 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University baseball players Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) both heard their names called on Saturday afternoon during the final day of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft. Smith was selected in the 34th round, 1,011 overall, by the Milwaukee Brewers. Ellingson was taken six picks later, 1,017 overall, by the Seattle Mariners.
Smith, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection this year after being named to the first team in 2015, started 13 games for the Blue & Gray during his senior campaign, finishing with a 3-6 record and a 4.52 ERA while recording a team-high 64 strikeouts in 81.2 innings pitched. His 64 strikeouts rank eighth in Georgetown's single-season history. Smith went 2-0 during GU's spring break trip to Florida, with wins over then-No. 15 Florida Atlantic and Penn, and also picked up a victory over St. John's. Over his final two starts, Smith broke three Georgetown career pitching records. In his start at Creighton on May 6, he passed Tom Bass ('83) for innings pitched and now holds the top spot with 309.2 career frames. When he took the mound in his final start against Villanova on May 13, Smith surpassed Tim Adleman ('10) and Eddie Pena ('05) with his 49th career start. In his final game, he also passed Adleman for the career strikeout lead, finishing his career with 229 strikeouts.
"It is surreal," Smith said. "I've worked my whole life to get an opportunity to play baseball at the next level. It has been a stressful process, but I couldn't be more thankful to have this opportunity."
Ellingson had a strong junior season as GU's closer. He tied the Georgetown record with 11 saves in 2016 and finished with a 2-4 record and a 3.29 ERA in 22 appearances. He struck out 24 batters in 27.1 innings of work. He allowed just four earned runs over his final 12 appearances, covering 14 innings and picked up saves in each of his final three appearances. Through just two seasons in the bullpen, Ellingson already ranks second in program history with 20 career saves.
"I could not express in words how excited I was when I saw my name come up for the Seattle Mariners," Ellingson commented. "It is a dream come true for me."
The two draft picks this year brings the total to 12 total selections under Georgetown Head Coach Pete Wilk. Last season, a program-record three Hoyas were taken in the draft, led by Nick Collins who went in the eighth round to the Oakland Athletics. Additionally, Curtiss Pomeroy (Atlanta Braves, 28th round) and AC Carter (Colorado Rockies. 40th round) were selected. Previously, Mike Garza (Milwaukee Brewers, 20th round) and Justin Leeson (Kansas City Royals, 39th) were both drafted in 2012 while Erick Fernandez (Washington Nationals, 25th) and Rand Ravnaas (Pittsburgh Pirates, 39th) were both drafted in 2011 after Fernandez (Washington Nationals, 46th) and Tim Adleman (Baltimore Orioles, 24th) heard their names called in 2010. Additionally, Matt Bouchard (New York Mets, 11th) was selected in the 2007 draft.
Georgetown concluded the 2016 season with a 25-29 overall record and an 8-10 mark in BIG EAST play, finishing just one game out of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas reached the 25-win plateau for the second-straight season and third time in the past four years.
