WASHINGTON - Georgetown field hockey sophomore Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) scored her first-career goal late in the first half, but William & Mary scored the game's first four tallies en route to a 6-2 victory Friday morning at Cooper Field.
The Hoyas (2-3) have won five of their last seven at home with losses coming to No. 2 Connecticut and William & Mary who was receiving votes in the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Coaches Preseason Poll.
Meanwhile, all three losses for the Tribe (1-3) this season have come against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the NFHCA poll, including No. 4 Duke.
Led by Cammie Lloyd, who had one goal and one assist, William & Mary jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the game's first 25 minutes. Maria Jose Pastor also had her team-leading third goal of the year.
With 6:03 remaining in the half, Maransky put Georgetown on the board after increased offensive pressure saw the Hoyas total three shots in just over three minutes. Junior Joanna Hawkins (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) also had shots for the Hoyas.
Less than a minute later, senior Aliyah Graves-Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg Academy) followed with another shot, but a defensive save by the Tribe kept Georgetown from cutting its deficit in half.
The Hoyas controlled the final 10 minutes of the half, totaling four shots and one penalty corner to none for William & Mary, but the Tribe held a 4-1 lead at the half.
Georgetown fell behind, 5-1, in the first 1:17 of the second half after Annie Snead was the last of three players for William & Mary to score their first goal of the season. During the team's current three-game skid, the Hoyas have allowed a goal within the first 10 minutes in five of the six halves, including all three opening halves.
With under 23 minutes left in the game, senior Molly Thompson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) scored her first of the season and second of her career off a corner when she redirected a shot from the top of the circle by senior Devin Holmes (Fleetville, Pa./Wyoming Seminary).
Lloyd scored her second goal of the game and team-leading third of the season with just 4:37 to play to cap the scoring as she finished the match with five points.
Senior Rachel Skonecki (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Red Land) made her fifth start and had two first-half saves before giving way to sophomore Chloe Verwiel (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) who made her first appearance of the season and second of her career, stopping two shots over the final 35 minutes.
Morgan Connor also had two saves for the Tribe.
William & Mary held a 17-10 edge in shots and an 8-5 margin in corners.
Georgetown quickly returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Loretto, Pennsylvania for a nonconference contest at Saint Francis beginning at 1 p.m.
