Final Results

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team opened up the 2017-18 season on Saturday, cruising to a dual meet sweep at the University of Delaware. Racing at Rawstrom Natatorium, the Hoya women defeated the Blue Hens, 186-114, while the men's squad won, 175-125. It was the first time in the program history that the GU men beat Delaware.

The Hoyas were boosted by seven freshmen who, swimming in their first collegiate dual meet, combined for 11 individual wins. The Blue & Gray won 20 of the 28 individual events and two of the four relays.

On the men's side, freshman Andrew Stange (St. James, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) registered three victories, winning both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard butterfly. Fellow freshman Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass./Central Catholic) also had two wins, touching the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, while classmate Jack Lynch (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) won the 200-yard butterfly. Junior Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, and sophomore Jack Calderwood (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) picked up Georgetown's ninth individual win by finishing first in the 50-yard freestyle.

The Hoya women were paced by three individuals who won two races apiece. Senior Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) swept both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, while sophomore Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) claimed both of the distance events easily, winning by eight and 13 seconds in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles, respectively. Freshman Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn./Darien) touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM, while finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke behind classmate Evie Mauzé (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School). Fellow freshman Alexandra Rieker (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ronald Reagan) won the 100-yard backstroke, while taking second in the in 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Lauren Henasey (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academic) just outtouched her opponent in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman diver Naomi Peng (Gainesville, Fla./Eastside) won the 1-meter event, while sophomore Elizabeth Miller (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) won the 3-meter dive.

Georgetown will return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 14 when it hosts Towson University in its first home meet of the season. The meet will get underway at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Pool.
