ARLINGTON, Va. - Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) lined a three-run double as part of a five-run seventh inning as the Georgetown University baseball team came back to defeat George Washington University, 6-4, on Thursday evening at Barcroft Park. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-5, while the Colonials fall to 2-7.
Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) made his first start of the season and went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) picked up his first career win, retiring the only batter he faced. Alex Deise (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. John's College HS [D.C.]/FSU) fired two perfect innings and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) had a perfect ninth inning for his second save.
Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) paced the Georgetown offense with four hits and a stolen base from the leadoff spot while Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) also had a multi-hit performance with two hits. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had a hit, an RBI, a stolen base and scored two runs.
GW broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, plating a pair of runs on a double, single and fielder's choice to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hoyas got a run back in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1. With Bernstein on first after his third single of the day, DeRenzi hit a ground ball to the shortstop. Bernstein was forced out at second, but the relay throw went into the GU dugout, allowing DeRenzi to move up to second. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) followed with an RBI double into the right-center field gap, scoring DeRenzi.
The Colonials extended its lead back to 4-1 with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings off of Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy).
The Blue & Gray batted around in the top of the seventh, putting five runs on the board to take the lead. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) and Bernstein loaded the bases with no outs. DeRenzi grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Garza to score before Racusin walked to reload the bases. After a GW pitching change, Stevens roped a three-run double into the right-center field gap to put the Hoyas on top, 5-4. Kuzbel followed with a triple into the left-center gap to provide an insurance run as Stevens scored to give GU a 6-4 lead.
Deise and Swad retired the final nine batters to seal the win.
Georgetown will travel to Florida on Thursday for its eight-game, 10-day spring break trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte. The Hoyas will play Chicago State (March 3, 2:30 p.m.), Boston College (March 4, 2:30 p.m.), Ball State (March 5, 10:30 a.m.), Western Michigan (March 7, noon), Central Michigan (March 8, 2:30 p.m.) and Lafayette (March 10-12).
Notes -- The start of the game was pushed back an hour due to inclement weather ... Racusin now has five extra-base hits (three doubles, two triples) in his past four games and five RBI in his last three games ... With his three-run double in the seventh, Stevens extended his hitting streak to six games (10-for -19) and now has eight RBI in his last three games.
