Hoyas Suffer 6-2 Setback to Navy

March 29, 2017

Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team managed 10 hits, but ultimately fell to the Naval Academy, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the loss, the Hoyas dropped to 14-11 on the season, while the Midshipmen improved to 16-9.

Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) led the GU offense with two hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Fla./Fremont) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) each finished with two hits as well.

Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started on the mound and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out three. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) retired the one batter he faced and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) fired a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.

Navy opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Hoyas answered in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) lined a single into center before Kuzbel launched his second home run of the season over the right field fence to give the Blue & Gray a 2-1 lead.

The Midshipmen scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to come back and take a 4-2 lead.

Georgetown tried to rally in the seventh and eighth innings, putting the leadoff man on in each frame, but double plays ended both threats.

Navy tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth off of Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) to complete the scoring.

The Hoyas will play three games against George Mason this weekend. The series is scheduled to open on Friday at 3 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field. Saturday's and Sunday's games, which will both be played at George Mason's Spuhler Field, are set for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Live stats and video streams for all three games will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
