Final Stats

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team had 10 hits and was walked nine times as it rolled to an 11-0 victory over Chicago State on Friday evening at North Charlotte Regional Park as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. With their third-straight win, the Hoyas improve to 5-5 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 3-5.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led the GU offense with three hits, including two triples, and also added two RBI and a run scored. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Ryan Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) each had two hits, while Davis scored three runs. John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) had three RBI.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) fired six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out five. Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville) and Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) each threw a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout. Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) also pitched one scoreless inning.

The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the third as DeRenzi tripled with one out on a fly ball into the wind in left field. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) drove DeRenzi home on an RBI ground out to give GU a 1-0 lead.

Georgetown expanded its lead to 3-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth. Kuzbel and Simourian reached on back-to-back bunts to lead off the inning. After Kuzbel was forced out at third on a bunt attempt by Davis, Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) loaded the bases as he reached on an error. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) then hit a grounder to the shortstop who threw wildly into right field as tried to force O'Reilly at second. Both Simourian and Davis crossed the plate to push the lead to 3-0.

The Blue & Gray tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. Davis led off with a single into right field and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by O'Reilly. He stole third and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City).

The Hoyas blew things open with a six-run seventh inning. A hit-by-pitch by Racusin, walk to Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and single by Kuzbel loaded the bases with nobody out. Simourian then lined a three-run triple down the right field line to clear the bases. Walks to Davis and O'Reilly reloaded the bases and, with one out, Bernstein hit an RBI ground out to second, scoring Simourian. DeRenzi followed with his second triple of the game, a line drive into the right-center field gap to score both Davis and O'Reilly to give GU a 10-0 lead.

Another run scored in in the eighth as Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) lined a two-out RBI single to left to score Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) who had walked to lead off the inning.

Chudacoff, Burke and Goldenberg combined to throw the final three innings, not allowing a hit.

Georgetown will return to North Charlotte Regional Park on Saturday to face Boston College at 2:30 p.m. Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.

Notes ââ'¬" Georgetown's three triples give it five in its past two games … DeRenzi became the first Hoya to have two triples in one game since Rand Ravnaas ('12) had two on May 19, 2011 at Seton Hall.
