April 11, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (6-7, 4-1 BIG EAST) will host the University of Cincinnati Bearcats (5-8, 1-4 BIG EAST) on Wednesday afternoon at Cooper Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Additionally, on Tuesday sophomore midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for her efforts over the past two games.
Whitehurst sparked the Hoyas to a pair of victories last week, stuffing the stat sheet with five goals, six ground balls, six draw controls and four caused turnovers. In a 14-13 victory at Villanova on Wednesday, the sophomore matched the team high with three goals while tying the game high with four ground balls. In a battle of second-place teams on Saturday against Vanderbilt, Whitehurst notched a game-high three caused turnovers, while converting on the other end of the field as well with two goals. She added three draw controls and two ground balls in the 18-11 win over the Commodores.
This is her first BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week honor this season after earning two nods to the honor roll. It is the second weekly award for the Hoyas and the first of Whitehurst's career.
Whitehurst leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 21 goals and a squad-high 14 assists. She also has a team-leading 50 draw controls. Sophomore attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) is second with 34 points on a team-high 27 goals and seven assists, while sophomore attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) has tallied 24 goals and seven assists for 31 points to round out the top three. There are nine Hoyas currently registering in double figures in points.
On defense, senior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has 77 saves to her credit, playing a majority of the minutes in goal. Senior defender Jenny Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony's) has forced a team-best 16 caused turnovers.
The Bearcats are coming off of a 19-2 loss to No. 3 Florida on Saturday. Freshman Monica Borzillo scored a second-half goal to increase her program single-season points record to 64. Currently, Borzillo owns the team's single season records for points (64), points per game (4.92), assists (31) and assists per game (2.38). Junior goalkeeper Alex MacAffer recorded a career-high five ground balls and a career-high two caused turnovers in the game.
The Hoyas are 8-0 all-time against the Bearcats and 4-0 at home. Last year, Georgetown won, 10-5, in Cincinnati as Whitehurst posted two goals and an assist in the victory. In the last meeting in The District, GU won by a score of 8-4.
