BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team outhit Creighton University, but left 11 men on base, falling 6-4 on Friday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 20-14 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Bluejays improve to 13-16 and 4-1 in conference action.
Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) led the GU offense with two hits, including his second home run of the season, and two RBI. Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) each added two hits.
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started and went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out eight. Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.] and Nick Morrealle (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) each fired a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, registering one and two strikeouts, respectively.
Garza started the scoring in the bottom of the second, launching his second home run of the season well over the wall in left-center field to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
A walk to Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and single by DeRenzi put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the third. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) laid down a perfect safety squeeze to score Bernstein and put GU up, 2-0.
Creighton tied the game with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fourth. The Bluejays took the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out walk and double and added another solo homer in the sixth to go up, 4-2.
The Hoyas got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) delivered a one-out RBI single into left field, scoring Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) who had led off with a walk.
After Creighton retook its two-run lead with a run in the top of the seventh, Georgetown got it right back in the bottom half of the inning. DeRenzi led off with a walk and stole second with two outs. After a walk to Stevens, DeRenzi scored on Garza's second RBI of the game, a single into left field.
The Bluejays tacked on an unearned run in the top of the ninth to make it 6-4. The Hoyas threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two runners on base with one out, but a sliding catch in center field ended the game.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch is scheduled for noon.
