FAIRFAX, Va. - Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) pitched 8.0-plus strong innings and the Georgetown University baseball team defeated George Mason University, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field. With the win, the Hoyas won the weekend series and improved to 16-12 on the season, while the Patriots fell to 10-17.
Superko scattered six hits and four walks while striking out six as he carried a shutout into the ninth inning for his fifth-consecutive victory. Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) struck out the only batter he faced and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) got the final two outs for his second save of the season.
Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led the GU offense with three hits and also scored two runs. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist), Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge), Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) all contributed a hit and an RBI.
After not putting a runner on base for the first three innings, the Hoya offense woke up in the top of the fourth with three-straight hits to lead things off. Bernstein opened the frame with a bloop double into left field and went to third on an infield single by Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). Racusin followed with an RBI single into left field, scoring Bernstein and giving GU a 1-0 lead.
The Hoyas extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth. Bernstein and Racusin reached on a single and an error, respectively, with one out. Both came around to score on a single by Kuzbel and double by Stevens.
Georgetown tacked on another run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Hall to score Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto), who had reached on a two-base error by the left fielder, and give the Hoyas a 4-0 lead.
George Mason scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Bialkowski and Morreale combined to shut the door to seal the win.
The Hoyas will return home to Shirley Povich Field on Tuesday to begin a seven-game homestand as they host Cornell University for a midweek matchup.
