Baseball Falters in Series Finale at Seton Hall

April 23, 2017

Final Stats

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored five runs over the final three innings, but could not complete the comeback, falling, 10-5, to Seton Hall University on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 21-18 overall and 0-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates improve to 21-16 on the season, and 5-4 in conference action.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) each finished with two hits to lead the GU offense. DeRenzi scored two runs, while Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) drove in a pair.

Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks. He struck out one. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out one. Noah Abdalla (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.]) fired a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Seton Hall jumped on the board quickly, taking a 3-0 lead after the first two innings behind a single, double and two triples, as well as a safety squeeze bunt.

Georgetown's deficit ballooned to 9-0 as the Pirates scored another run in the fifth and five, three earned, in the sixth inning off of three GU pitchers.

The Hoyas got on the board with doubles from Kuzbel and Bernauer in the top of the seventh, but could only score the one run as they stranded the bases loaded.

After Seton Hall added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-1, Georgetown scored two more in the top of the eighth. Walks to Jake Berstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and Kuzbel, sandwiched around a bunt single from DeRenzi, loaded the bases with nobody out. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) and Bernauer plated both Bernstein and DeRenzi to cut the deficit to 10-3.

Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led of the top of the ninth with a solo home run, his fourth of the season to make it 10-4. Consecutive two-out single by DeRenzi and Kuzbel made it 10-5, but that was as close as the Hoyas would get.

Georgetown will return home to Shirley Povich Field for a midweek game against UMBC on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Live stats and a video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com and in-game updates can be found on the team's twitter account: @GtownBaseball.

Notes ââ'¬" Kuzbel's double in the seventh inning to extend his streak to 34-consecutive games of reaching base safely.
