April 25, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team will return home to Shirley Povich Field on Wednesday for a midweek matchup against UMBC. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but was moved to Wednesday due to inclement weather in Tuesday's forecast.
The Hoyas (21-18) are coming off of a tough three-game, BIG EAST series at Seton Hall over the weekend, dropping all three games. Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) continued his strong play as of late, leading the offense a .385 average, a double and two RBI. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) homered and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had a team-high three RBI.
For the season, Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) leads the Hoyas with a .377 batting average and is tied with Stevens and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) for the team lead with four home runs. Kuzbel, who is batting .351, leads the team with 36 RBI, while DeRenzi is right behind him with 34 and Stevens has 33.
In the BIG EAST, DeRenzi leads all players with 61 hits and 10 sacrifice bunts, while ranking fourth with 34 RBI. Kuzbel leads the league, and is tied for the national lead, with nine sacrifice flies, while ranking third in the BIG EAST with 36 RBI.
UMBC enters Tuesday's game with a 13-17 overall record and a 7-5 mark in America East play. The Retrievers are batting .286 as a team and are averaging more than two doubles per game. The pitching staff owns a 6.27 ERA and opponents are batting .303 against UMBC.
