Final Stats

BETHESDA, Md. - Playing in front of a lively crowd of alums, friends and family, the Georgetown University baseball team used an all-around effort to cruise to a 9-0 victory over NYIT on Saturday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas won their fifth-consecutive game and improved to 19-12 on the season, while the Bears fell to 3-21-1.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and fired 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just seven hits. He tied his career high with nine strikeouts, while walking none. Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville) pitched a scoreless inning, while Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) and Casey Goldenberg (North Palm Beach, Fla./Suncoast Community) combined for a perfect inning, registering one strikeout apiece.

Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) led the offense with three hits and three RBI. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS), Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) all finished with two hits apiece.

The Hoyas opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, plating a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) reached on a walk and moved to second on a ground out. DeRenzi singled him in and went to second on an errant throw. Racusin followed with a second-straight two-out single to score DeRenzi.

Georgetown broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on five walks and two singles. Hall led off with another walk and, after a Bernstein sacrifice bunt, went to third on an infield single by DeRenzi. He scored on an RBI groundout from Racusin. Walks to Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) and Stevens loaded the bases before a single by Garza pushed DeRenzi across the plate. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) drew back-to-back walks to force home two more runs and give GU a 6-0 lead.

Racusin drove in his third run of the game with a single in the sixth inning to score Bernstein, who had singled to lead off the inning. After he stole second and went to third on a fly out, Racusin scored when Stevens lined his 10th double of the season in the left-center field gap.

The Hoyas capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth when Stevens singled to score Joe Sleiman (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), who had reached on a two-base error to open the inning.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a noon contest. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats and a video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Live updates can be found on the team's twitter account: @GtownBaseball.

Notes - Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) registered his first career hit with a double down the left field line in the eighth inning.
