Flashback Friday: Georgetown Wins the BIG EAST Championship

Sept. 8, 2017

The 2017-18 academic year marks the 25th Anniversary of women's soccer at Georgetown University. As part of a planned celebration for the 25th Anniversary during the season, Head Coach Dave Nolan will share his top-10 moments in the history of the program leading up to a celebration for the program on Sept. 30.

The No. 2 moment on Nolan's list was a regular season game just a year ago, but it was one of the seminal moments in the history of the program, a 2-0 win over Marquette to win the program's first-ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship.

Under Nolan's guidance, the Hoyas had made a steady climb to be among the best in the BIG EAST, reaching the championship game two times, but losing both of those games. In 2016, the Blue & Gray finished in second place in the regular season, but had the benefit of knowing the semifinals and finals of the league tournament would be played on Shaw Field.

"Winning a BIG EAST Championship is something we strive to do every year," Nolan said. "Over the years the BIG EAST has been such a tough conference that it hasn't been easy. We have come close a number of times but lady luck tended to desert us in these moments.

"Last year, the team was determined to be the first group to capture our first tournament title. We had to battle to get past DePaul in the semifinal on PK's, but we were confident facing off against Marquette in the final. On the day we put in a complete performance, Grace Damaska scored a great goal to put us one up and Rachel Corboz finished off a great move to notch our second. The result was never in doubt and to be able to win our first conference championship in front of our fans here at Georgetown was the perfect ending and funnily enough a sign of things to come that year."

The Hoyas received a first half goal from Damaska and Corboz scored in the second half to ice the win, while the defense limited the Golden Eagles to only shot in the win.

"I'm happy for this team," Nolan said after the game. "They're a great bunch of kids. I'm blessed. We've had so many great teams over the years and so many wonderful kids, but this group, last year and this year, have been a lot of fun. They just come every day and work hard. They just don't give you an ounce of concern."

It was Georgetown's third appearance in the BIG EAST Championship game, the first two appearances coming up on the short end with a 1-0 loss to Marquette in 2012 and a 2-0 loss to DePaul in 2014. Georgetown improved to 16-2-3 overall, tying the school record for wins in a season, set previously in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively.

"It's been a monkey on our back now for a few years," Nolan said. "It's tough and it's not easy to win. It's a great conference and every year there's always one or two good teams. We've usually been one of the two and we've come up short on occasion and today was our day. I could sense it when we came to the field. We had talked about how important this game was and that this was too good of a team to not win a championship. I knew from when we left the team room this morning it wouldn't be for a lack of being ready."
