WASHINGTON – Georgetown University junior left-handed pitcher
Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) has been named to the 2019 Preseason Baseball All-BIG EAST Team, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Killam was one of six unanimous selections on the preseason team, which was selected by votes of the league's seven head coaches.
Killam had a breakout season on the mound in 2018, earning a nod to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. He compiled a 6-4 record with a 3.06 ERA in 82.1 innings and set the Georgetown single-season record with 97 strikeouts, which ranked third in the BIG EAST. Over a stretch of seven appearances, covering 38.0 innings, Killam allowed just five runs while striking out 48. He did not allow more than one earned run in any one of the seven outings, including a seven-inning complete game win over Princeton.
Killam was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 26 after striking out 11 in 6.2 innings in a victory at Ohio State. He followed that up two weeks later with a career-high 12 strikeouts in a win over Xavier. Killam also earned a selection to the weekly honor roll on April 30 when he fired 8.1 innings on the road to defeat Creighton.
In the 2019 Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Blue & Gray was picked to finish sixth with 13 points. Defending BIG EAST champion St. John's earned 36 points and six of the seven first-place votes, while Creighton and Seton Hall tied for second with 25 points. Xavier (24) and Butler (17) were both ahead of GU, while Villanova was picked last with seven points.
Georgetown will open the 2019 season on the weekend of Feb. 15-17 at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Hoyas will play Illinois, Sacred Heart and the host Demon Deacons. GU is coming off a 2018 season that saw it finish with an overall record of 25-30, going 25-20 after dropping the first 10 games of the year to earn the program's fourth-consecutive season 25-win season and the fifth in the past six years. The Hoyas went 8-9 in BIG EAST play, qualifying for their first conference tournament since 2015 and just the second since 1986.
