WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team lost a rain-shortened game on Saturday afternoon, falling 15-1 in five innings to Gardner-Webb University. The game was played at Wake Forest's David F. Couch Ballpark. With the setback, the Hoyas fall to 0-2 on the young season, while the Bulldogs improved to 2-0.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had an RBI double and was on base twice. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) also had a two-base hit, while John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) had GU's third hit, beating out an infield single. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) and Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) both reached base twice.
After Gardner-Webb jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Hoyas got a run right back in the bottom half of the inning, as Weisenberg delivered a two-out RBI double over the center fielder's head to score Simourian, who had singled and advanced to second on an error, to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The GU defense came through in the top of the second as a Gardner-Webber runner tried to score from first on a double. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) fired the ball into Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) who turned and threw a strike to Stevens at the plate to nab the runner and end the inning.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the top of the fourth, pushing eight runs across the plate off of three GU pitchers. They added four more runs in the fifth to make it 15-1.
The game was called after five innings due to deteriorating field conditions as a heavy mist had been falling for most of the game.
The Hoyas conclude their season-opening weekend on Sunday morning, playing Navy in a neutral site game. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Wake Forest's David F. Couch Ballpark. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
