WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team doubled up the Naval Academy in hits, but could not score the tying run, dropping a 2-1 decision on Sunday morning. The game was played at Wake Forest's David F. Couch Ballpark. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Midshipmen improve to 2-1.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went 5.2 strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out two. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) pitched 1.2 innings scoreless of relief, striking out two and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) retired both batters he faced.
Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led the GU offense with three hits and also stole two bases. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) was on base three times with two singles and a walk, while also stealing a base. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) registered his first career hit, a fourth inning single.
Superko was on early, facing the minimum number of batters in three of the first four innings including a four-pitch fourth inning. However, Navy opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the eighth. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led off the inning with a double and went to third on a ground out. Two batters later, pinch runner AJ Lotsis (Phoenixville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
In the ninth inning, Shirley singled and stole second with one out, but Georgetown could not bring him around to tie the game.
The Hoyas will return to North Carolina next weekend for a three-game series at Davidson, Feb. 23-25. The Wildcats made a run through the Atlantic 10 playoffs last spring before upending the No. 2 national seed, North Carolina, twice in the NCAA regionals to reach the Super Regionals.
