Final Stats

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team fell behind early and could not come back, falling to Davidson College, 9-2, on Friday evening. The game was played at Davidson's Wilson Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 4-1.

Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) started on the mound and went 4.0 innings, allowing six runs, four earned on five hits and five walks, while striking out three. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) pitched 3.0 innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run with two strikeouts. Conor Cuse (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/Stanford) did not allow an earned run in an inning of work, striking out two.

Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) led the GU offense with a pair of hits and stole a base. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) was on base twice with a pair of walks.

Davidson wasted no time getting on the board, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and two GU errors. The Wildcats added two more in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The Hoyas began chipping away, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings without the benefit of an RBI. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led off the third inning with a double, went to third on a single by Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and scored on a wild pitch. In the fourth inning, Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The Wildcats added a run on a pair of two-out doubles in the sixth inning before adding a pair of unearned runs in the eighth to push their advantage to 9-2.

James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) recorded his first career hit in a pinch-hitting appearance in the ninth inning, but Georgetown could not come back any further.

The two teams will resume the three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Wilson Field. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Hoyas. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
