DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson College scored 11 runs over the first three innings and defeated the Georgetown University baseball team, 16-5, on Saturday afternoon. The game was played at Davidson's Wilson Field. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 0-5 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 5-1.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and lasted just two-plus innings, giving up 10 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) came on in relief and pitched 4.0 strong innings, striking out seven and allowing just two runs on three hits and a walk. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) made his pitching debut and threw 1.1 scoreless innings.
Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led the offense with a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season, and scored two runs. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) also had a pair of hits with a single and a double. James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) entered the game late and had two hits and an RBI.
Davidson broke the game open early, hitting six home runs in the first four innings to push 12 runs across.
The Hoya offense broke through in the top of the fourth inning. Singles by Bernstein, John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) and Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) plated a run. It was McCabe's first career RBI.
Bernstein launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning, clearing the fence in right-center field to score Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga), who had reached by a hit-by-pitch, cutting the deficit to 12-3.
The Wildcats scored four runs in the seventh off of Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont).
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) doubled in Kai Nelson (New York, N.Y./Fieldston) in the ninth, and then scored on an RBI single by Gabor to complete the scoring. It was Gabor's first career RBI.
