Hoyas Earn Series Split With 5-3 Victory

March 18, 2018

Box Score

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team defeated Princeton University, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon to earn a weekend series split at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-14, while the Tigers fall to 2-9.

Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) got the start on the mound and picked up his first collegiate win with his best outing of the season. He fired 6.0 strong innings, allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out three. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) registered his third save of the season with 3.0 innings of relief, giving up two runs, one earned on four hits with one strikeout.

Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) had three hits and an RBI, while Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) each had two-hit performances.

After threatening to score in each of the first couple of innings, the Hoyas broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led things off with a double and went to third on a single by Weisenberg. A wild pitch scored Stevens and, following a sacrifice bunt from O'Reilly, Weisenberg scored on a two-out single by Shirley. Shirley proceeded to steal second and came around to score on a pair of passed balls to make it 3-0.

Princeton got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Blue & Gray answered right back in the bottom half without the benefit of a hit. Two walks and two hit batsmen, the latter by Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), forced home a run

Princeton scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to cut GU's lead to one, 4-3, but a clutch, two-out RBI single by Davis in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton), gave Georgetown a much needed insurance run.

Swad closed the door in the ninth to seal the victory.

The Hoyas will close out their six-game homestand with a midweek matchup against Navy on Wednesday. First pitch at Shirley Povich Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
