Box Score

WASHINGTON - Ohio State scored four runs over the ninth and 10th innings to rally and defeat the Georgetown University baseball team, 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 6-16, while the Buckeyes improve to 16-7.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) got the start on the mound and went 4.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits and six walks while striking out four. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) fired 2.2 innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) gave up two runs in two innings of work.

Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) each had two hits and scored a run. Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) also had a multi-hit performance with a pair of base knocks.

The Hoyas took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Consecutive singles to lead off the inning put runners on the corners before a fielder's choice ground ball by Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) pushed Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) across the plate. Later in the frame, an infield single by Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) scored McCabe to put GU up by two.

Ohio State got a run back in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 2-1. The Buckeyes loaded the bases with nobody out but, after a sacrifice fly, Morreale came in and got two big strikeouts to limit the damage.

Bernstein led off the eighth inning with a single, and went all the way to third when the left fielder misplayed the ball. Two batters later, he scored on an Achecar infield single to give the Hoyas a two-run lead, 3-1.

The Buckeyes tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off of Swad.

Going to extra innings for the first time this season, the Hoyas reclaimed the lead in the top of the 10th inning. Gabor led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shirley. After a ground out pushed him to third, Gabor scored on a two-out single by McCabe.

Ohio State walked off with the victory in the bottom half of the inning with a walk, double and single off of Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) to win, 5-4.

Georgetown will return to Shirley Povich Field for a midweek contest against Delaware State. First pitch against the Hornets is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
