GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team dropped the series opener, 7-3, to UNC Greensboro on Thursday evening at UNCG Baseball Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 7-17, while the Spartans improve to 18-6.
Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) started on the mound and went 5.0 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out four. Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Deerfield Academy) gave up two runs in two innings of relief and Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) fired a perfect inning.
James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) had two hits with a triple and a single, and also scored a run, while Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) had two hits and was on base three times.
The Blue & Gray took a quick lead in the first inning, scoring a run without the benefit of a hit as two hit batters and two walks forced home a run. The Hoyas doubled their lead in the second inning as Gabor lined a one-out triple in the right-center field gap and crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga).
Lamon started strong, shutting down a strong UNCG offense over the first three innings, including needing just five pitches in the second.
The Spartans tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth with a single, triple and ground out. They took the lead with a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth and added another run in the sixth, making it 6-2.
The Hoyas got a run back with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Bernstein blooped a single over the third baseman's head and raced around to score on a double by Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) into the left-center field gap, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
A solo home run in the bottom of the seventh extended UNCG's lead back to four, 7-3.
Georgetown put base runners on in each of the final two innings, but could not cut into the deficit anymore.
The two teams will resume the three-game series on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Links to live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.
