Georgetown Falls Short to Northeastern

March 6, 2018

Final Stats

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team came back to tie the game, but ultimately fell, 9-5, to Northeastern on Tuesday evening. The game was played as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Florida. With the loss, GU falls to 0-10 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 8-3.

Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) started on the mound and went 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) was the first out of the bullpen and went 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) allowed a run in two innings of work with two strikeouts.

Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led the offense with two hits and two RBIs and was on base three times. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) both also had RBIs.

After Northeastern took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Shirley answered right back in the top of the third, cutting the deficit in half with a solo home run over the right field fence for his first career homer.

The Huskies used four hits in the bottom half of the third to score three runs and open a 5-1 advantage.

The Hoyas wasted no time in responding as the first five batters reached, and four scored, in the top of the fourth to tie the game, 5-5. Walks to Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) and Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School), sandwiched around an infield single by John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover), loaded the bases with nobody out. McCabe lined a two-run double down the right field line, scoring both Davis and Simourian, before DeRenzi reached on an error to push both Achecar and McCabe across the plate.

Northeastern retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch. The Huskies then added an insurance run in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth.

Georgetown put runners on base in three of the final four innings, but a pair of double plays killed the rallies.

The Blue & Gray will be back in action at the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Wednesday with a matchup against Western Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
