PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Georgetown University baseball team recorded season highs in hits (15) and runs (9), picking up the first win of the season with a 9-5 victory over Western Michigan on Wednesday afternoon. The game was played as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte, Florida. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 1-10 overall, while the Broncos fall to 6-5.

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and picked up the win, going 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) allowed a run in an inning of relief. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) picked up his first save of the season with 2.2 innings of one-run ball with two strikeouts.

Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the offensive outburst. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and Richie O'Reilly (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Loyola HS) each finished with three hits and an RBI. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) also had a multi-hit performance with two base knocks.

Western Michigan was the first on the board, taking a 3-0 lead with a run in the first inning and two more in the third.

The Hoyas broke out the bats in the bottom of the third, sending all nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) led off with a walk and, one out later, moved up on a single by Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice). McCabe followed with a single into center field. Bernstein stopped at third, but continued home when the throw eluded the catcher. After a walk loaded the bases, O'Reilly lined a single to left to score Stevens and McCabe followed him on another errant throw. Consecutive RBI singles by Weisenberg and James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) plated two more runs to give GU a 5-3 advantage.

After the Broncos got a run back in the top of the seventh, the Hoyas answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to three, 7-4. Stevens was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and replaced by Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) as a pinch runner. With two outs, O'Reilly singled to put two runners on and Weisenberg followed with a single into right field, scoring Superko and sending O'Reilly to third. O'Reilly continued home on a throwing error.

Western Michigan scored a run in the eighth to pull back within two, 7-5. Swad limited the damage, however, allowing just one to score after the bases were loaded with nobody out.

Georgetown answered with two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Shirley led off with a single and went to second on a Bernstein sacrifice bunt. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) launched a triple into the right-center field gap, pushing Shirley across the plate. One out later, McCabe chopped a single into right field to score Daivs and provide the final score, 9-5.

Following an off day on Thursday, the Hoyas and Broncos will meet again Friday at the Snowbird Baseball Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.. Live stats will be available at
