ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team won its third-consecutive one-run game, 3-2, over Navy on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-20 while the Midshipmen fall to 25-10.
Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) started on the mound and went 5.0-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out three to win his second game of the year. Jeremiah Burke (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central/La Salle Institute) fired two hitless innings with a strikeout while Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) had a strikeout in a scoreless inning. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his first save of the season.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) led the offense with three hits, including a double and an RBI, while Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) also had two hits. Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) was on base twice with a pair of walks.
The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, thanks to some Navy wildness on the mound. A single and three walks, the last by Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS), forced home a run to give the Blue & Gray a 1-0 advantage.
The lead expanded to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Davis led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School). Weisenberg then laced a double into the left-center field gap to score Davis. After a wild pitch moved Weisenberg to third, he scored on an RBI ground out by Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga).
Navy got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on two triples and a wild pitch to cut GU's lead to one, 3-2.
The trio of Burke, Superko and Morreale shut down a potent Navy offense over the final four innings, allowing just one hit to seal the win.
The Hoyas will stay out of BIG EAST play this weekend, April 13-15 and will play a split weekend against George Mason. Friday's (3 p.m.) and Saturday's (2 p.m.) games will be at Shirley Povich Field, while Sunday's (1 p.m.) contest will be played in Fairfax, Virginia.
