WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team won a pair of nonconference games on Wednesday, sweeping the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks in a doubleheader at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas came away with a 7-5 win in game one, before coming back with a 7-6 victory in the second contest. With the two wins, the Hoyas have now won eight-straight games, and 12 consecutive at Shirley Povich Field, to improve to 23-24 overall. The Hawks fall to 12-39 on the year.

Game One: Georgetown 7, UMES 5
The Hoyas opened the game with five quick runs to take a large lead they would never relinquish eventually winning, 7-5.

Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) started on the mound and pitched through 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out six and picking up the win. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) fired one inning of relief giving up one run, while Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) combined in the final inning. Swad was awarded the save as the Hoyas held on for the victory.

Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) led the offense with a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) managed two hits, one triple and a double, and scored two runs for the Blue & Gray.

The Hoya offense was hot early on as a Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) single began the inning. A double from Davis scored Bernstein and an error on the next at bat allowed Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) to cross the plate. Davis stole home to make it 3-0 before a double down the left field line from Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) put one more up on the board. GU closed out the inning with a single to right field from Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) sending Weisenberg home to make it 5-0.

The Hawks would get one back in the top of the second, but Georgetown matched the run in the bottom of the inning. A triple from McCabe to lead off would result in a run as Bernauer sent him home on the next at bat to give the Blue & Gray the 6-1 lead.

The Shore battled to get back into the game with a pair of runs in the fourth inning as well as runs in the six and seventh. However, Georgetown held on and scored the insurance run in the bottom of the fourth as a double from McCabe set up Davis with a double of his home to score McCabe which would help the Hoyas nab the 7-5 victory.

Game Two: Georgetown 7, UMES 6
Georgetown battled back from an early deficit in the second game to score a pair of late runs and hold on for the 7-6 and the sweep.

Jacob Grzebinski (Bellaire, Texas/Emery Weiner) started on the mound and pitched 5.0+ innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks. He managed five strikeouts and was awarded the victory to move to 3-1 on the season. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) entered in relief facing just one batter, before Swad came in for the final inning allowing no hits and striking out one for his 11th save of the year.

Bernauer led the GU offense with two hits including a double and a triple, and three RBIs as well as one run scored. McCabe put together another solid performance with two hits, managing his second-consecutive triple, and two runs scored. Bernstein was credited with a pair of RBIs in the game.

The Shore jumped out to a 5-0 in the top of the first, but Georgetown answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) doubled down the left field line and an error moved him to third before a Bernauer double allowed both McCabe and Ryan M. Davis to scamper home making it 5-2.

The Hoyas tacked two more in the bottom of the second to pull within one run of the Hawks. Weisenberg led off with a single to third as he worked his way around the bases before Bernstein sent him home on a sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly on the next at bat from Ryan M. Davis allowed DeRenzi to cross the plate for the Blue & Gray before the inning ended.

The teams matched runs in the third as a Bernauer triple set him up to score on a fielder's choice by Weisenberg making the score 6-5 in favor of the Hawks.

Georgetown managed to pull ahead in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led off with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. Berstein hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield as Shirley scampered home to tie the game at six. McCabe followed up with a triple down the right field line and scored on the next at bat on a fielding error by the Hawks to give the Blue & Gray the 7-6 lead.

Despite some tough situations in the final three innings, the defense managed to hold on for the 7-6 victory and the sweep for the evening.

Georgetown will return to BIG EAST Conference action traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana for a three-game series with the Butler Bulldogs. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Live stats for all three contests will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
