Cushing Named to Honor Roll; Hoyas Host Coppin State Wednesday

WASHINGTON – After 15 games on the road to start the season, the Georgetown University baseball team (3-12) will play its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Coppin State at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and live stats and a video stream will be available at GUHoyas.com.

On Tuesday, senior Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after setting a Georgetown single-game record with 16 strikeouts last week against Mount St. Mary's. He allowed just one earned run and did not walk a batter in 7.0 innings of work. The first six outs of the game were recorded via strikeout, and Cushing struck out the side again in the fifth inning. Overall, Cushing had at least one strikeout in all seven innings, and two or more strikeouts in four different frames. The 16 strikeouts were not only a GU record, but also were the most by a BIG EAST pitcher since April 7, 2017 (Zac Lowther, Xavier). Cushing jumped him from 11th to eighth on the program's career strikeout list with 174.

For the season, Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn. / Conn.) leads the Hoyas with a .393 (22 for 56) batting average and has a team-high .493 on-base percentage and is second with 10 RBIs. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif. / San Ramon Valley) is batting .344 (21 for 61) and leads GU with seven doubles, three triples and a .656 slugging percentage. He also has two home runs which is second behind Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School / Washington and Lee University) who has three homers to go along with a team-high 12 RBIs. As a team, the Hoyas are batting .282 while the pitching staff owns a 5.74 ERA.

Coppin State enters Wednesday's contest with a 6-5 overall record and dropped its final two games at Charlotte over the weekend. The Eagles are batting .275 as a team and are led by Carlos Alvarez who has a .368 (14 for 38) average with team highs of five doubles and 10 RBIs. Marcos Castillo is hitting .324 (12 for 37) and has stolen five bases while Justin Banks has hit a team-leading three home runs. The Coppin State pitching staff has a 5.76 ERA.
