Hoyas in the Pros: Simon Mathews

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University baseball alum Simon Mathews (C'17) is about to enter his third spring training as a member of the Los Angeles Angels organization. The right-handed pitcher is one of eight Hoyas playing in affiliated professional baseball and he recently did a video interview for GUHoyas.com recapping his 2019 season and talking about how he is preparing for 2020.

Mathews pitched across three minor league levels for the third-straight year in 2019. He was primarily used out of the bullpen for the Advanced Class A Inland Empire 66ers in the California League. In 21 appearances, he registered a 4.98 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 56 innings. Mathews also made two appearances in Double-A and three in Triple-A where he picked up a win and a save. Overall, in 26 appearances in 2019, covering 68.1 innings, Mathews finished with a 1-2 record, one save, a 5.53 ERA and 60 strikeouts.

In three professional seasons, Mathews has compiled a 13-12 record and a 4.51 ERA in 71 appearances, including 31 starts. He has 231 career strikeouts in 237.2 innings pitched.

Mathews signed a free agent deal with the Angels in June 2017 after finishing a stellar career at Georgetown. He graduated from the Hilltop in Georgetown's top 10 for career wins (14), ERA (3.72) and strikeouts (186) and, as a senior, set a then-program record with 85 strikeouts. As a junior Mathews was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and his five complete games in 2016 were the most by a Georgetown pitcher since 2003 and his 95.1 innings pitched tied for the third most in a Georgetown single-season history.

Georgetown opens the 2020 season on Feb. 14 as the Hoyas travel to Thomasville, North Carolina for a three-game neutral-site series against Navy.
