Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. RV/24 Georgetown women's soccer team leaves Queens, New York Sunday night with a 1-0 victory over St. John's. The game had a slow start as it started to rain heavily, but Georgetown's Gia Vicari was able to find the back of the net to push the Hoyas to 8-0-6 overall and 4-0-2 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm falls to 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"This was a huge road victory for the team today as we played against a very good team who is very well coached. I am happy with the fact we were able to grind out another victory today. Conditions were challenging; quite windy, rained a little bit, so the artificial surface was a little bit quick. In the first half we were going against the wind and we needed Allie to make a couple of good saves to keep things good for us. Going into the second half 0-0, we were in good position for where we needed to be and then in the second half we stepped it up a gear. We scored off a corner kick and probably could have had one or two more. To be fair, they had a great chance off a corner kick late in the game and Allie had to make a great save to help us get the victory. We will take it, another three points in the bag, and it keeps us up there challenging for the BIG EAST regular season crown and hopefully the option to host."
About the Win
- The Hoyas and Red Storm were evenly matched through the first half with both teams having two quality looks on goal.
- Georgetown's goalkeeper Allie Augur was forced to make two diving saves to keep the Hoyas with the shutout through the first half.
- Graduate students Zsani Kajan and Sydney Cummings were matched up throughout the game with Cummings doing well to isolate Kajan who is St. John's leading goal scorer with 11 goals.
- Heading into the second half, the Hoyas kept the majority of play in the Red Storm's defensive third.
- The Blue & Gray earned a corner in the 53rd minute which senior Maya Fernandez-Powell stepped up to take. Playing a lofted ball to the back of the box, the Red Storm defense was unable to clear the ball out of the box and Vicari smashed it into the net to put the Hoyas on the board.
- The Red Storm had a chance late in the game around Georgetown's box, but Augur made a big save pushing the ball up and over the crossbar to leave the final score at 1-0 in Georgetown's favor.
